Type 1 diabetes – stem cells after years on insulin?
Hi. My brother is 32, type 1 since age 12. Excellent control with pump (HbA1c 6.5–6.8), but he’s tired of constant monitoring and hypos. We heard about stem cell-derived beta-cell therapies or regenerative protocols in clinics abroad that might reduce insulin needs even in long-standing type 1. Has anyone looked into this for adults with type 1? Any realistic feedback?

Type 1 is tougher because of autoimmunity, but some centers work with immunomodulation + stem cells to try protecting any remaining beta cells or supporting new ones. In long-term type 1 (like 15–20 years), complete insulin independence is rare, but several patients report lower insulin doses (20–50% reduction), fewer hypos, and more stable glucose curves over 1–2 years.
This particular patient story felt honest and detailed (adult type 1, 18 years on insulin) https://stemplus.clinic/disease-treatment/diabetes/ - shows daily insulin changes and CGM patterns before/after. Not a miracle, but meaningful for some. Very important to find clinics that do thorough immune testing first and combine with immunosuppression if needed. Discuss with a type 1 specialist - they can assess residual C-peptide etc.
